What is SD-WAN?

How SD-WAN Works

As technology advances and changes, network security and performance also change and develop. Moreover, this change and development must keep pace with technology. For this reason, the next-generation performance network connection is called SD-WAN. It is expressed as Software-Defined Wide Area Networking in English. One of the main reasons why it is preferred by corporate companies is its ability to connect branch offices and their data across vast geographical distances, despite these distances. It is a software technique used to make wide area networks smarter and more flexible.

Types of SD-WAN

SD-WAN connection, also known as next-generation network performance, has the ability to use multiple WAN connections simultaneously. Looking at SD-WAN technology, four main features stand out. These features are listed as follows.

  • It supports multiple connection types.

  • A dynamic path selection is made.

  • A simple interface is needed to manage the WAN.

  • Finally, it must support VPNs.

Enterprise-Specific SD-WAN: Enterprise-specific SD-WANs can be a suitable solution, especially for smaller localized companies. Cloud-Enabled SD-WAN: This type of SD-WAN offers an SD-WAN box that connects to a virtual network gateway. Cloud-Enabled plus Backbone SD-WAN: Companies using this type of SD-WAN already have an SD-WAN box. Instead of connecting to the internet, these offices prefer to connect to the ISP's nearest POP point, and therefore, the ISP's fiber-connected backbone is used as the main backbone. In general, SD-WAN connects users to any application located in the cloud from the data center. In addition, it determines which path completely meets the ideal performance requirements for a specific application, and then routes the traffic to the WAN path that is ideal.
